Cork (map) Cork is county to the south of the Republic of Ireland, centred around the city of the same name. The City of Cork is European City of Culture 2005. More information about Cork can be found at the following pages. Wholey Family W1 originated in Cork. Bantry (map) Bantry is a market town and port. Also known as Bantry Bay. Skibbereen (map) Skibbereen is the capital of West Cork and many Wholeys or Irish origin can trace their roots to this city. The West Cork Tourism website is based in Skibbereen, and there is a Skibbereen website as well. In the Irish Potato Famine of 1846/7s Skibbereen was one of the worse hit areas. In 2002 the Skibbereen and District Historical Society was established. The town is described further in the Lewis Topographical Dictionary 1837.
